Discover Costa Marina Restaurant

Walking into Costa Marina Restaurant on 182 Market St, Paterson, NJ 07505, United States feels less like stepping into a diner and more like being welcomed into a neighbor’s kitchen. The first time I ate here, I stopped by after a long workday, expecting a quick meal. Instead, I ended up lingering over coffee because the staff treated me like a regular, even though it was my first visit. That sense of comfort shows up not just in the service, but in the food itself.

The menu leans heavily into classic Italian-American comfort dishes, the kind people in Paterson have grown up with. Think generous portions, rich sauces, and recipes that don’t try to reinvent tradition. On one visit, I watched the cook carefully finish a seafood fra diavolo, tasting the sauce before sending it out. That attention to detail matters. According to the National Restaurant Association, consistency is one of the top factors diners cite in positive restaurant reviews, and this place clearly understands that. Each plate comes out looking and tasting like someone actually cares about what lands on the table.

What stands out is how the kitchen balances simplicity with flavor. Pasta isn’t drowned in sauce; instead, it’s coated just enough to let the ingredients speak. The chicken parm, a local favorite, arrives crispy on the outside and tender inside, topped with melted mozzarella that stretches just right when you cut into it. I once asked a server how they keep it from getting soggy, and she explained they fry to order and sauce only at the last moment. That small process detail makes a big difference and shows real-world kitchen experience at play.

Seafood is another strong point, which isn’t always a given for neighborhood diners. The calamari is light and clean-tasting, not rubbery, and the shrimp dishes actually taste fresh. The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program often stresses the importance of sourcing and handling, and while this isn’t fine dining, the results here suggest the kitchen respects its ingredients. You can tell when fish hasn’t been sitting around too long.

Reviews from locals often mention the welcoming atmosphere, and that lines up with my own experience. Families come in after church, couples stop by for casual date nights, and solo diners sit comfortably at corner tables without feeling rushed. One afternoon, I overheard a server greeting a customer by name and asking about his kids. That kind of connection doesn’t happen by accident; it’s built over time and earns trust in a community.

The location on Market Street also makes it easy to swing by whether you’re running errands downtown or heading home from work. Parking can be tight during peak hours, which is worth noting, but most regulars seem to plan around it. Inside, the space is clean and unpretentious, with no flashy décor trying to distract from the food. It feels honest, which is refreshing.

While the menu doesn’t change dramatically with the seasons, that’s part of its appeal. People come here knowing exactly what they’ll get, and they keep coming back for that reason. If there’s a limitation, it’s that adventurous eaters looking for trendy twists might not find them here. But for diners who value reliability, warmth, and well-executed classics, that’s hardly a downside.

In a city with plenty of dining options, Costa Marina Restaurant has carved out its place by doing the basics right and treating people well. It’s the kind of spot you recommend to friends not because it’s flashy, but because you trust it to deliver a satisfying meal every single time.

  • I got there as a recommendation from my sister who said that the food was delicious. We ordered 2 lomo saltados, 1 ruleta de mariscos, 1 papas a la huaicaina. The food was good, not the best lomo salteado but really 9/10, it was really good. My brother in law ordered la ruleta rusa and said it was also good. Why I give it 4/5 stars is mostly because of the service. The waitress had a bit of an attitude. We ordered 2 lomos and one was to share and when we got the order, she brought 3, we said that we ordered 2 and she said “I’m going to take it but you said 3”, we also ordered a pitch of Maracuya juice, she brought Jamaican, and we said it wasn’t right and she said “we don’t have any juices”, again, with an attitude. It might’ve been my impression but my whole party also said that. But she was the only one. There were other two servers who seemed really kind! The music was also a bit loud for my liking, couldn’t hear well our conversation.

  • Chicha was very good. We asked for yuca a la huancaina but was servered papa a la huancaina. I usually don't like papa a la huancaina but we ended enjoying it. My boyfriend ordered the seafood plater and he didn't care for the ceviche nor didn't care for the sauce that comes in the cup that comes part of the dish but enjoyed the rest of it. The chaufa my dish was very good.

  • Its a great place to eat or take out. Their servings are very generous and cooked to perfection. Best to call ahead with your order otherwise you'll be waiting a while since they always tending to the tables or on the phone taking orders. I don't know how is their delivery service but it was a bit expensive so better call ahead and pick it up and enjoy it at home.
